Father’s Day…
Father’s Day…
There are pictures that stop you for a second.
Not because they’re perfect or because everyone is smiling.
But because you realize that every face in that picture changed your life forever.
I look at this picture and I see scraped knees, bedtime stories, tears over things that seemed huge at the time, laughter that shook the house, slammed doors, hard conversations, graduations, mistakes, victories, prayers whispered in the dark, and thousands of moments that nobody else will ever know.
Being a dad has been one of the greatest gifts God has ever given me.
It hasn’t been easy or predictable.
There have been days I felt like I was getting it right. There have been days I was painfully aware of all the ways I was getting it wrong. There were moments I wanted to protect them from everything, and moments I had to stand back and let them learn things the hard way. There were seasons when I had answers, and seasons when all I could do was pray and trust God with people I love more than words can explain.
And that love is hard to describe.
It is fierce.
It is irrational.
It is the kind of love that changes the way you see the world.
A piece of your heart starts walking around outside your body, and suddenly every joy feels bigger and every hurt feels deeper.
The older I get, the more I understand that fatherhood was never about controlling outcomes. It was about showing up. Being present. Choosing them again and again. Loving them when it was easy and loving them when it wasn’t. Pointing them toward Jesus as imperfectly as I knew how.
I have made mistakes.
More than I wish I had.
But I have never once regretted choosing to be their dad.
Not for a second.
If I had the chance to do it all over again, knowing every sleepless night, every worry, every heartbreak, every sacrifice, every difficult season that would come with it, I would still say yes.
Every time.
Because these kids, now grown and growing, have taught me more about love, grace, forgiveness, patience, faith, and the heart of God than I could ever teach them.
Fatherhood has stretched me, humbled me, broken me, healed me, and made me better.
And if there is one thing I know tonight, it is this:
Long after careers fade, accomplishments are forgotten, and the things we spend so much time chasing disappear, the people God entrusted to us… they are what matter the most.
They always will.
And being their Dad will always be one of the greatest honors of my life.
